Then this carnival went into hibernation for about two centuries and now recently in 1980, it was revived by the Municipality. Now it is getting more popular year by year.
The Carnival of Venice celebrates the transgression of winter into spring. The carnival is mosaic of tradition, spectacle, history and transgression dotting a single grand city. This is an event where all the differences among the powerful and the commoners get diminished as all are masqueraded behind stunning and bizarre masks of several colors and designs. Masks are special characteristic of this great carnival.
The carnival of each year is based on a different exclusive theme. A visitor can enjoy the two weeks of revelry and festivities at St. Marks' Square, the theatre, streets, squares, and public buildings. During the carnival an ambience of XVII century is created by actors, acrobats, dancers and musicians. It is all round different experience to be at the carnival, you enjoy jokes, magic, disguise behind a mask and the surprise and be surprised.
Presence of masks made the carnival unique. While behind the mask, people can hide their social status too and temporarily social order get changed. Ion the year 1436, wearing of masks and costumes was made official. Maskmakers or mascareri had important place in society.
