If you are lucky enough to visit Niagara Falls, the spectacular set of waterfalls situated on the border between the United State of America and Canada, you will need to thank the last Ice Age for the stunning display of rushing and tumbling water you will see.
But Niagara Falls is an ever changing spectacle, and if you had visited the Falls ten years ago and went back again today, they would be located some forty feet further upstream than they were previously – such is the natural power of erosion caused by the constant flow of water.
There are actually three waterfalls which combine to be known as Niagara Falls. The first two are the American Falls and the Bridal Veil Falls. But perhaps the most well known of the three Falls goes by two names – the Canadian Falls, otherwise known as the Horseshoe Falls, because of its distinctive shape.
People have been drawn to Niagara Falls for centuries, and it has been a popular place to go on honeymoon since the early 1800s, when one of the first honeymooners included Napoleon Bonaparte's brother. Niagara Falls' history also tells the tale of a woman who sailed over the Falls in a barrel, and was lucky enough to live through the experience. Nowadays the recommended way to see the Falls up close is via a helicopter ride. You can also take the trip of a lifetime on the new SkyWheel, where you can see Niagara Falls from 175 feet high, giving a whole new perspective of the Falls.
But there is far more to do here than just see the famous cascading waterfalls. You can visit the Bird Kingdom or explore the Niagara Parks Butterfly Conservatory, and at the end of a long day you can relax in the comfort of your room in the Niagara Falls Hotel.
If a wine tour is more to your taste, the Niagara wine region has plenty to offer with more than two dozen vineyards to explore. If you have youngsters to entertain as well, you might want to explore the delights offered by Clifton Hill – it's packed to the brim with games, pool tables, crazy golf, eateries and much more, all to keep you entertained for hours.
Many people are so excited at the thought of seeing the world famous Falls, they don't realise how much more there is to see and do in this beautiful and stunning area. Whether you are a young honeymooning couple, a family of four looking for somewhere different to go on holiday, or a retired couple in need of an unforgettable break, you will find plenty to do once you get there.
But one thing remains true – the Falls themselves are the crowning glory.
